FWA Open Call Pawpet Show Update

Hey, everyone,

Plans are coming along nicely for the FWA open-call pawpet show. I'm working up four skit ideas - one is a solo act, but the other three will be group efforts, and I'm looking for volunteers to help on them. Here are my specific needs:

Since 2006 marks the tenth anniversary of the olympic games in Atlanta, I want to do a number to the musical version of Jeff Foxworthy's 'Games Rednecks Play'. I'm planning to perform the character that will be a furry Foxworthy, but I need someone to perform the character that would do Alan Jackson's vocals. If you're familiar with this one and would like to help me with it, please let me know. BTW, this is just lip-sync and manipulation - the pawpeteer will not have to do any singing.

For a second act, I'm going to do a puppet dance number to the classic Jazz song 'Linus and Lucy'. I'm using two of my generic characters for the dancers, but I want to have Snoopy make a cameo appearance at one place in the song. I have a Snoopy plush, but no Snoopy puppet - if you have a Snoopy puppet, please let me know ASAP. If I can't get ahold of a puppet, then I could use someone who could hold up and manipulate the plush to make it look like its dancing.

The third group act is going to need a chorus of pawpets, and I'm hoping we can get all interested pawpeteers behind the stage with one or two puppets each. We'll just have to see how it goes.

We've got an hour for the show, which I've broken into eight five-minute segments plus a little time for an opening act and a closing act. I'm going to try to finish up at about ten till the hour, as we are immediately preceding the variety show, and I want to leave a little time for everyone to get prepared for it.

So, I've got four time slots in the Pawpet Show open to anyone who wants to claim them, and if I get a lot of interest, I'll drop my one solo act to create an additional fifth slot. If you're interested in doing an act, then please comment here (you only need to give a minimum of detail - primarily your staging requirements, number of pawpeteers, and whether or not you are looking for other pawpeteers to work with you.) I will need to preview acts during our second pawpetry panel, so plan to present your full concept then.

Finally, I'm looking for a pawpeteer who'd be interested in helping with a number during the FWA Variety Show. This person would be performing a bird puppet as a newborn hatchling. I could use an exotic bird puppet for this one, so if you happen to have something that fits the bill (pun intended ;-), then please let me know ASAP.

FWA is three weeks from this Friday - ready or not, here it comes!

Cheers,
Santa Fox

Just so you know...

This isn't going to be an open call show if you have scripted so much of it. Open call, traditionally means that you just leave the stage open to anyone that wants to try puppeteering, either beginners or advanced puppeteers. What you have so far is a half scripted and half open show.

Re: Just so you know...

Yeah, the naming doesn't exactly fit what it's evolved into. My main reason for using 'open-call' was to try to make it clear that this was a show that anyone could get involved with if they want to do so. I've run into furs who were not sure if they could participate in a con's puppet show, and there are some cons that do put on non-participatory shows (e.g., the Funday Pawpet Show at MegaPLEX). So, I was just trying to come up with a way to make the nature of the FWA show as clear as possible.

I was originally planing to have a much more 'open' show, but I couldn't get as much time as I really wanted. The pawpet show is also right before the Furry Variety Show, so I can't even run to the end of the one hour I've got. Given these difficulties, I felt that structuring the show a little more would help us to make the best of the time we've got.

In a nutshell, I'm going to see what kind of pre-show interest I get, and try to ensure that those who have prepared something get a chance to do their acts. I want to do a couple of my own ideas, and then if there's time to fill, I'll open up the stage to anyone at the show who's interested. If there aren't any takers, then we'll keep the show going with some of the additional ideas I'm working on.

So, it's not really a traditional 'open-call' show, but more of an open-call/variety show hybrid. While it's too late for me to get a name change into the official schedule, I'm open to ideas for a better name that I can use in the future. I'm also hoping that next year I'll be able to get more time for performances. If that happens, then I'd like to have two puppet show sessions - one for pawpeteers with planned acts, and one that's a true 'open-call' show.

We'll just have to see how this year goes. This is my first time running a full track, so I'm giving it my best shot, and I'll take everything I learn this year and use that knowledge to try to do even better next year.
